The Cool Climate Champion Wines of Hermanuspietersfontein
Hermanuspietersfontein Wingerde, the BWI Champion Conservation Farm’s philosophy that Good Earth makes Better Wine, is paying dividends. The cellar opened its doors in 2006, and for three of the next four vintages Swartskaap, their single cultivar Cabernet Franc, walked off with SA Terroir Wine Awards which proves beyond reasonable doubt they produce the best wine in this category in South Africa.
This brand’s white wine, Die Bartho, joins Swartskaap in the 2011 Terroir Wine Awards and is recognised as the best blended white wine in South Africa. “This is no mean feat and neither is it a coincidence – France’s cool climate Loire Valley is well-known for producing some of the world’s best Sauvignon blancs as well as Cabernet francs,” says Bartho Eksteen, 2010 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year, “and our farm is blessed with the same terroir attributes.”
The partnership between this cool climate Walker Bay champion farm and the duo of viticulturist, Ernst Bruwer, and winemaker, Bartho Eksteen, is making good on their winemaking philosophy.
