A trio of Platter’s 5 star stunners for Mullineux Famile Wines
The much anticipated list of 5 star wines in the upcoming Platter’s South African Wines 2012 was announced at the Wines of South Africa Cape Wine Europe tasting in London today.
Platter’s is widely recognised as the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the world of South African wine and this year more than seven thousand wines were tasted. A total of 139 wines were nominated for the coveted five star rating, with only forty five wines being awarded this top honour.
Mullineux Family Wines is a small, highly focused family run winery based in the village of Riebeek Kasteel in the Swartland region. Husband and wife winemaking duo, Andrea and Chris Mullineux started the winery in 2007 together with business partners, Keith Prothero and Peter Dart with the aim of producing a select portfolio of hand-crafted wines from the granite and shale based terroirs of the region.
This year all three of their signature wines received five star recognition by Platter‘s:
2010 Mullineux White
2009 Mullineux Syrah
2010 Mullineux Straw Wine
This Platter’s success continues a great year in ratings for Mullineux Family Wines, as they also recently received high praise from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate website, eRobertParker.com. This site is an independent consumer’s guide to fine wine and the ratings are widely regarded as the most influential in the world of wine. Robert Parker’s rating system employs a 50-100 point quality scale, called Parker Points®. The 2010 Mullineux White scored 91 points, the 2009 Mullineux Syrah 92 and the Mullineux Straw Wine 94 points.
“We are grateful and humbled with the recognition our wines have received thus far. That such a small and new winery should obtain three 5 star wines, is truly an amazing achievement. We adopt a minimalist approach to wine-making and focus upon expression of the Swartland terroir. Therefore this acknowledgement is not only great for the Mullineux brand, but also for the entire Swartland region, a place we are passionate about,” said Andrea and Chris.
They also produce two wines in their entry level Kloof Street range which are made in a style that emphasises balance and great value drinkability. The 2011 Mullineux Kloof Street Chenin Blanc scored 88 Parker Points and the 2009 Mullineux Kloof Street Rouge received 89 Parker Points.
The cellar and tasting room are situated in the charming village of Riebeek Kasteel, roughly 1 hour from Stellenbosch or Cape Town.
Opening Hours: Saturday 10am to 3pm or otherwise by appointment.
