Germany is now the No 1 importer of South African wines
What has already been indicated in the December figures for the past year became a reality in January 2012. Germany replaced Britain as the biggest importer of South African wines.
In the 12-month period from February to January Germany was 81.02 million liters (+13%) for the first time before the UK with 80.9 million liters. New in the top 10, at number ten, is the People’s Republic of China, which reached a total import increased of 17 %. In the bottled wine, the increase was 66%. This is the third highest percentage increase of all importing countries.
Significant growth in the acceptance of filled wine show in African countries like Kenya (+30%) and Nigeria (13%). Britain is still the biggest consumer of bottled wines from South Africa. This is followed by Sweden in second place (18%), Holland and Germany (- 8%) and USA (- 7%).
