New Assistant Winemaker at Creation Wines
Ask Werner du Plessis about his winemaking philosophy and he replies without hesitation: “To make good wine you need healthy grapes, passion, experience and a dynamic environment”.
And this, according to the outspoken thirty-something Werner is why he is over the moon about his recent appointment as Assistant Winemaker at Creation Wines.
Having completed his B Agric (Cum Laude) at Elsenburg in 2008, Werner went on to achieve a diploma in Cellar Technology in 2009. In the meantime he also gained valuable practical experience at top South African wineries such as Kaapzicht and Hazendal.
What does Werner enjoy most about winemaking? “The challenge, and at Creation I have the chance to learn about Pinot Noir, an opportunity I’ve never had until now. I also look forward to adapting to a different style of Sauvignon Blanc since the terroir is completely different to what I’ve experienced before.”
While regarding Creation’s unique terroir on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge as an inspiration, Werner is also keen to learn from Creation’s highly talented and internationally experienced winemaker, JC Martin. “At Creation the energy and passion to create wines of distinction is contagious, to say the least!”
