Ultra Liquors wins Trophy and Gold at the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Show
Ultra Liquors has clinched a Discovery of the Show trophy and a Gold Medal at the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
The Secret Cellar Sauvignon Blanc 2011 collected the Old Mutual Discovery of the Show award. The Trophy is awarded to the Gold Medallist whose final score – at the trophy judging – divided by its declared price on the entry form, yields the highest index (adjusted for category). In short, it is an award for the best value Gold Medal wine, and this year may indeed have yielded the best value index in the history of the show.
“If I told you where it comes from, I’d have to kill you” says Mark Norrish, general manager of national retailer Ultra Liquors’ wine division. He eventually divulges that the grapes where grown and vinified on the West Coast, but that’s it – not another word about this wine’s origin, which is a feature of the own-lable Secret Cellar range.
“The 2011 vintage wasn’t an easy one” he remarks, “yet my supplier still managed to build a wine that shows linearity, complexity and palate richness. The grapes were hand picked and -shorted prior to fermentation and the wine was made naturally.”
According to Mark the market is moving away from the more herbaceous style of Sauvignon Blanc towards the more full-fruited style.
The Table Bay Chenin Blanc 2011 and Secret Cellar Sauvignon Blanc 2011 also claimed the second and third spots respectively in the “Top 10 Best Value Whites”. This is indeed a remarkable achievement and proof that Ultra Liquors is not only the cheapest wine and liquor retailer in South Africa, they are also the leading retailer when it comes to value for money.
The Table Bay and Secret Cellar ranges offer a variety of red, white and sparkling wines and are available exclusively at Ultra Liquors’ stores, nationwide. Prices range between R25 and R55.
