Dine responsibly during hearty StreetSmart Soup Season
Dine responsibly and tuck into hearty winter one pot wonders when popular Cape Town and Winelands restaurants cook up a storm during StreetSmart Soup Season for the entire months of July and August.
StreetSmart SA, an organisation dedicated towards helping street children rebuild their lives, has rallied participating restaurants in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Somerset West and Paarl to serve delicious soups throughout the winter to raise funds and heighten awareness. Working hand in hand with NGO’s actively involved in the social development and rehabilitation of street children, StreetSmart raises funds through a voluntary R5 donation with each table’s bill atparticipating restaurants.
From gourmet potato & leek soup and exotic lemon grass, coconut milk & coriander to traditional butternut, pea & ham or “spek en boontjies”, there is something for everybody in this winter feast of soups.
In addition to offering locals nourishing winter soups, StreetSmart Soup Season is aimed at making more people aware that it is better to support the wonderful work StreetSmart beneficiary NGO’s are doing to extend a hand to these marginalised youths, than to give money to children living on the streets.
“Please do not give money to children on the street as it will keep them there. Rather suggest that the child goes to one of the shelters which can really help them, and by dining in StreetSmart restaurants diners support such initiatives,” says Nils Heckscher, Chairperson of StreetSmart SA.
The Cape Town restaurants participating in the StreetSmart Soup Season are, amongst others: 6 Spin Street, Harveys @ Winchester Mansions, Keenwä, San Marco, Savoy Cabbage and Tobago’s at the Radisson Blu Hotel. In Stellenbosch, sample the soups at Dornier Bodega Restaurant and Makaron @ Majeka House. The participating restaurants in Franschhoek are Monneaux and The Bistro at Allée Bleue, in Helderberg is Sage Restaurant, whilst the Restaurant @ Glen Carlou will be keeping the soup on the boil in the Paarl area.
Since its inception in June 2005, StreetSmart has raised over R5,1 million through participating restaurants and private donations all contributing towards social development and educational upliftment projects for street children in their respective areas.
“We are deeply grateful for all the generous support and contributions each and every one of the 51 StreetSmart restaurants has made. It is because of these restaurants, that we as an organisation can help to make the lives of street children better,” added Heckscher.
StreetSmart SA is a registered Public Benefit Organisation as well as a Non Profit Organisation and ensures that every cent donated by diners goes towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children. The organisation was set up under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu by a group of concerned Capetonians and comprises resourceful board members representing business and the hospitality and tourism industries. Similar StreetSmartorganisations also run independently in the UK, San Francisco and Australia.
