Drops Of Gold From The Rhone
When most people think sweet wines they think of Sauternes. Others considering fortified wines always come up with Port. But what about a cross between the two that comes from Provence in the South of France? Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you Beaumes-de-Venise, making delightfully sweet fortified wines on the eastern side of the southern Rhone valley in a method called Vin Doux Naturel.
They are sweet wines that have been fermented up to 7% alcohol and then had their fermentation stopped by the addition of a grape spirit, which, by stopping the fermentation early gives you a wonderful sweet flavour and, with the addition of the grape spirit gives you a final alcohol level of between 15 and 16%.
