3 Unusual wines to try at this year`s Stellenbosch Wine Festival

3 Unusual wines to try at this year`s Stellenbosch Wine Festival photo

On Wednesday Die Braak in Stellenbosch played host to the Stellenbosch Wine Festival Lifestyle Experience Evening, presented by Pick n Pay.

A VIP cocktail function was held to launch the Stellenbosch Wine Festival Foundation. The Funds will be used for the development of young people who have a passion for winemaking, but are unable to afford to further their studies in the field. All proceeds from last night’s event  as well as the Grape Golf Challenge which will take place today (31st January) will go to the foundation.

Following on from the VIP cocktail event, the Stellenbosch Wine Festival Lifestyle Experience Evening was opened to the public and we had the opportunity to taste through ruffly 130 wines on offer at this year’s festival. Considering that it was a school night, we did not get around to taste them all, but below are some pretty unusual wines we think are worth a try.

Asara White Cabernet Sauvignon

This very unusually wine might not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you haven’t tried this white wine, made from red wine grapes then we suggest you pay Asara’s stand a visit.

Mooiplaas MCC

Bubbly lovers rejoice! This latest addition to Mooiplaas’s portfolio will not only delight the palate, the label also offers something kinky for the eye. This MCC over-delivers at R125 a bottle. While you are there also give their Chenin Blanc a go. Truly delicious!

KNOR Hoek White and KNOR Hoek Red

If your looking for the bargain of the day look no further than these wines, produced by Knorhoek Estate. Not only is the packaging fit for a hipster, the price-tag is dirt cheap at R25 for the Red blend and R21 for the White. Perhaps not so unusual, but it’s as easy on the palate as it is on the pocket!
