2 Pocket Friendly Summer Sippers

The holidays have come and gone but summer is still here and when the thermometer hits the high notes, you need drinkable relief that’ll cool you to the core.

A summer sipper, in my opinion, starts with a screw-cap, is affordable and is usually white. Over the holidays I stumbled upon two wines from the Darling region that ticks all the boxes.

Alexanderfontein Wines is the lifestyle brand within Ormonde Private Cellar’s portfolio. The wines have been crafted for easy enjoyment and offers real value for money.

First-up is the Alexanderfontein Sauvignon Blanc 2012. For only R40 you get a refreshingly crisp Sauvignon Blanc that displays tropical aromas of fig, white peach and a slight hint of green pepper. This white is easy on the palate and pocket and suitable for any occasion. Throw some oysters into the mix and you’ve got a winning combination.

Tasting Notes

Over the past couple of months my love affair with Chenin Blanc has grown stronger and stronger. Whether it’s a full bodied wooded Chenin or just an everyday quaffer, I’m seduced by the cultivars high acidity and fruity undertones. The Alexanderfontein Chenin Blanc 2012 is by no means a serious wine. If your looking for a wine to enjoy with your next Chinese take-out, then this is the one. It’s lively, fresh and affordable at R35 a bottle.

Ormonde Private Cellar is situated in the heart of Darling and their tasting room is open to the public. Whenever you find yourself in the vicinity pop around and taste some of the other offerings in their wine portfolio. The tasting experience will not only please the palate but also the pocket.
